Basic Information about the Jenin Governorate

  1. At present, it has more than 70 villages and towns and one refugee camp. Before 1948, it had more towns and villages. Most of them were from the 1948 towns and villages.
  2. Parts of the city are in Marj Bin Amer (aka Plains of Zirein). The area of the those plains is about 351 sq km which is a little less than the area of the post 1948 Gaza Strip.
  3. The 2016 population projection of the governorate is about 319,000.
  4. The 2016 population projection of the city of Jenin is about 48,000.
  5. The 2016 population projection of Qabatya (the largest town in the governorate) is about 24,000. It's about 6 km away from Jenin. The largest town in the governorate before 1948 was Um Elfahm (about 25 km away) which belongs now to Haifa governorate.
  6. It's about 40 km away from the city of Nablus and less than 80 km away from Jerusalem.
  7. The total area of the governorate is more than 580 sq. km.
  8. Founded by the canaanites and was called Ain Jeim.
  9. It has woods and forests.
  10. It has many historics sites. These include
    1. A statue (built by the Germans) for three German pilots whose warplanes were shot down by the British in 1917.
    2. Zababda. Mary and John the baptist used to rest there on their way from Bethlehem to Zazareth and vice versa.
    3. Burqin. It is one of the places which witnessed one of the miracles of Jesus Christ. It also has the fifth oldest church in the world.
    4. The expected well in which Joseph was dropped by his brothers.
    5. Many other ruins from the canaanites era, Roman era, Byzantine era, otman era, and other eras.
    6. Also, the ancient town of Sabastia is not far away. Sebastia has ancient Muslim and Roman grave yards, Roman palaces, Roman prison, Roman theatre, Road of Comuns, castle, ancient mosque/church/temple, the grave of John the baptist (the head is not there), etc
